Back To Basics - Dicing an Onion

Diced onion is what the majority of recipes start with and something that I feel like I spend the majority of my life doing ;) It’s one of those things that once you get comfortable with, you can breeze through before you even get a chance to cry.

Cut the onion in half, slicing downwards through the root, then peel. Discard the peel.

Lay the onion half flat, slicing horizontally and keeping the root intact.

Cut 5-6 vertical slices into each half, leaving the root intact.

It should look like this.

Slice downwards across these cuts to dice.

It’s also really important to cut on a stable surface. If you have a cutting board that is slipping around, you can wet a kitchen towel and place under your cutting board to prevent the board from moving while you work.
